advice
to newcomers
Courses are suitable for all ages, and newcomers
are particulary welcome, with help given. Bring old-ish clothes, a pen,
a watch, a map case (if possible) and a compass if you have one (but this
is not necessary for complete beginners). The grid references for each
event can be found on OS Land Ranger (purple cover) sheets 73 and 74.

cup 1999
The Scottish Club playoff is on April 18th
at Dalkeith Palace Park. The new format this year means all competing clubs
fighting it out on one day, with the winners travelling to Oxfordshire
for the UK final. The location couldn’t be much handier for Roxburgh Reivers,
so please keep the day free. Club commissar John Tullie will be contacting
all regular competitors for availability!

scotlandsgaloppen
1 - balmaha (loch lomond), march 14 1999
There was a good turnout from Reivers for
the first Scotlandsgaloppen of 1999, which was matched by equally impressive
results. Roxburgh Reivers had winners in seven classes. John Tullie won
M40L, Robin Sloan was first on M50L, Carol Boyd won W21S, as did Donald
Wallace (M45S), sons Gregor (on M20S) and Fraser (M12B) and Douglas Tullie
on M12A. Other juniors who acheived notable results included Andrew Tullie,
who was third on M10A and fifth place for James Tullie on M14A. In the
seniors, Douglas Henderson recorded a top ten finish on M45L, and Bill
Bruce was fifth behind Donald, as was Lindsey Knox on W40L. There were
also third places for Jim Knox (M50L) and Dick Warren (M55S). The open
hill meant fast going but starting at the lochside gave an awful lot of
climb - and spectacular views.

M14A. Carol Boyd (W21S) and Lindsey Knox (W40L) were both sixth on their

kjellstrom international festival - guildford, easter weekend
Seven Roxburgh Reivers made the long trip
South to Guildford for this year's Jan Kjellstrom International Festival
of Orienteering. Over the two days of competition some good results were
achieved, notably by Robert Cranston, who came 31st on the competitive
M21S and Donald Wallace who finished in second place on M45S. He was joined
in the runner-up spot by son Fraser, who was competing on M12B and Anne
Henderson on W18B. Fiona Forrest also had a excellent weekend with a top
ten finish on W21S. Other good results included Douglas Henderson,
who came 53rd on the popular M45L and Eleanor Wallace who was 43rd on W45S.

annual
general meeting
The Committee was re-elected en masse, Judy
McNeilly remaining as Chairperson, Rob Cranston as Secretary, and John
Tullie as Treasurer. The Club’s thanks go to them for all the hard work
involved in running the Club over the year. This time the video recorder
worked and after the business part of the meeting, those present were able
to experience mountain running in Jura (as in whisky, not French limestone)
to the sound of the Jura celidh band.

orienteering championships 99 & highland ’99 update
Our
day is Day 6, which is Saturday August 7th, and follows the World Championships
Short Final, which will be held in the morning, all as yet at a secret
location!.
One of the organisers is our own Lindsey
Knox, and Lindsey has asked the Club to run the String Course, the Off
String and the Wayfarers Courses. We are also asked to help with the Information
Tent, and in supervising the Assembly Field.
The other Clubs on that day will be ELO who
are manning the finish and juice, and Interlopers who are allocated the
starts and car parking. With the use of electronic punching, there should
be no need for the usual masses of control card checkers!

park tour - june 15, kelvingrove park, glasgow
This event, which is one of a series attracting
top international orienteers, is designed to be spectator orientated, with
very short control legs, and will be raced at high speed. Scotland is hosting
one of the events on Tuesday June 15th, at Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow.
Although many will have work commitments, if any club members can attend,
it should make for an entertaining evening. The organisers need help, and
free World Park tee shirts are on offer to those who volunteer. Please
contact Donald Petrie 01505 613094 if interested.
