Scottish Championships 2008

Posted on 27th May 2008

John and SchiehallionJohn Tullie finally got his hands on a Scottish Individual trophy, comfortably winning M50L on Saturday. He was (is !) chuffed. Eileen also had a cracking run to win W45S and was chuffed too. Carol got in the frame with a 2nd place on W35S, and Jim was 3rd on M60S. James didn’t get “on the podium” but his 4th on M21 Elite was a great run considering his recent injury.

Best result among the younger members was Kirstin’s 3rd place in W16A.

We had 4 teams in the relays and managed some very respectable results. John, Lindsey and Robin were 1st in the H15 class. Ian, Jim and Andrew were 7th in the H12 class. Rob, Eileen and Carol finished 4th in the H15 class but were n/c due to being too young. The junior team of Sarah, Karen and Kirstin were 5th in the -48 class and first all-girl team.

Results are here.

The weather was brilliant, the scenery spectacular and Day 3 of Tay 2009 at the same venue will hopefully be just as good. We’ll have late starts that day so the bracken should be nicely battered down.

Scottish Sprint Champs and SOL2

Posted on 12th May 2008

Douglas at the FinishAnother double orienteering weekend saw another set of Scottish titles for members of Roxburgh Reivers.

On-form Douglas Tullie continued his season by being joint winner of the Open class at the Scottish Sprint Championships held in Stirling on Saturday but was unlucky to trip near the finish line and lose vital seconds which cost him a clear win.

With information being relayed back to the commentary team from radio controls Kirstin Maxwell had a nervous wait knowing her rivals were close to matching her time, but the outcome was a well-deserved victory in the under 18 class for Kirstin by 20 seconds.

Fiona Forrest also made it into the frame with an excellent 3rd place in the Women’s Open class.

Kirstin flat outOn Sunday the action moved south of Stirling for the second round of the Scottish League onto an area of open moorland and complex mature forest. There were wins for Robin Sloan and Douglas Tullie, 2nd places for James Tullie, John Tullie, Jim Knox and Eileen Maxwell, and 3rd place for Kirstin Maxwell.

2008 Future Champions Cup Final - North Yorkshire

Posted on 5th May 2008

Douglas TullieForget all the other cup finals (the ones with the round ball) the FCC is the one to win, and Douglas Tullie did just that at the weekend, winning M20E by 8 minutes to book his automatic place in the British Team for the Junior World Champs this July.  You will remember that Douglas and James dead-heated in the same competition 2 years ago, a feat unlikely to be repeated.  This will be Douglas’ 3rd and last time at JWOC, as he joins the senior ranks in 2009.

The Scottish Junior Squad were also in attendance at the FCC, running in their normal badge classes.  Kirstin Maxwell had 2 good runs, finishing 4th on both days.  Sarah Tullie gave Kirstin a good run for her money on Day 1 finishing in 5th but had a slight blip on Day 2 to finish 18th.  Karen Maxwell, still in her first year at W14, finished 7th and 14th while Ian and Eileen were 11th/15th and 11th/5th respectively.

British Champs 2008 - Culbin Forest

Posted on 21st April 2008

Photo: Douglas Tullie, silver medallistThe forest was tricky, the courses long, the runnability mainly fast, and everyone agreed that it was a testing area. Culbin Forest on a sunny afternoon takes some beating! Roxburgh Reivers were in charge of Emit brikke issue before their runs so we were aware of all the sweaty bodies finishing with tales of woe. Douglas Tullie was the star again, taking 2nd place on M20E although he would obviously have preferred the gold medal. Everyone else managed a respectable run, some more respectable than others, but we all got our money’s worth.

Photo: RR's bronze winning Ad-hoc relay teamWe had 3 teams in the relays, all doing Ad Hoc. The planners had made no compromise on the TD5 courses and runners had to keep concentrating. The team of Lindsey Knox, Jim Knox and Robin Sloan managed a podium place, taking bronze only 4 seconds behind silver place. This was RR’s first British relay medal since 1996. The other 2 teams packed well in 11th and 12th place.

All in all, an enjoyable weekend of racing and a few weeks before the next SOL for some of us, the writer included, to get some technique training done.

Another RR British Champion

Posted on 9th April 2008

Photo: Douglas competing last weekendRoxburgh Reivers Orienteering Club are celebrating another British title holder after last weekend’s British Middle Distance Championships in Warwickshire. With every second making a difference, Douglas Tullie won the M20 race by a comfortable margin of 28 seconds for the 6.5km course.

Douglas had another excellent run in the 3.1km Sprint Championships the following day and was close to making it a double but was beaten into second place by 3 seconds.

CompassSport Trophy 2008

Posted on 17th March 2008

We were cruelly robbed of 3rd place and a place in the final by some late finishing TAY’s so we’ll need to wait another year for our crack at glory.  Hopefully it won’t clash with BUSA again next year and we’ll have our students available to run.

The final results were so very close with a measly 7 points separating ourselves and TAY, the difference being only a few seconds on some courses.  Our sole course winner on the day was Robin Sloan on Green but there were other notable runs, including team captain John Tullie who led by example with a 10th on Brown despite his knee injury.

The results are here .

Hop over the Border, Step up to Dalkeith, Jump on a plane to Salisbury

Posted on 10th March 2008

The ladies section of Roxburgh Reivers made two very successful sorties over the Border last weekend.

The trio of Karen Maxwell, Eileen Maxwell and Lindsey Knox headed for a Regional/Ranking event in Northumberland, held on wet and heathery moorland near Kirkwhelpington, and came home with three tremendous first places. Club exiles Fiona Forrest and Douglas Henderson came north for the day and finished 3rd and 4th in their classes.

Travelling with the Scottish Junior Squad were Kirstin Maxwell and Sarah Tullie who had the long journey to Salisbury to compete in a combined National Event and Future Champions Cup qualifier. Kirstin had a storming run to finish in 2nd place in a very competitive class while Sarah Tullie had another solid run in 19th place, only 13 minutes behind the winner.

Closer to home the Cattermole family were at the lovely Dalkeith Park for the latest South of Scotland league event. Jamie had the best result finishing 11th on Orange with brother Iain not far behind in 15th place. Mum Jenny was 14th on Light Green. Bill Bruce was also in attendance, finishing 34th on Blue (probably saving his strength for the Pentlands!).

SOL1 - Drumlanrig Castle

Posted on 2nd March 2008

The Scottish Orienteering League kicked off again on Sunday at Drumlanrig Castle and, being relatively close to home, Reivers were out in force and came away with a plethora of top 4 placings.

Making a better start to 2008 than she did in 2007, Lindsey Knox had a clear victory in W45L and Jim also had a “not bad run” to win course 8 by a mile. Sarah Tullie took a good 2nd place on JW5S and Ian Maxwell’s calf injury is improving so he managed an easy 2nd on M45S despite making the same cockup on parallel paths that he made the last time at Drumlanrig.

Finishing in 3rd were: Douglas Henderson on a very competitive M55L course, Karen Maxwell on JW4, Kirstin Maxwell on JW5L, Carol Boyd on W35S and Eileen Maxwell on W45S. In 4th were Bill Bruce M55S and Fiona Forrest

W21L. Andrew Armstrong was 9th on M50L which had the largest entry of all the age classes.

All these excellent results bode well for our CompassSport Trophy match on 16 March but we’ll be missing a few key players so a good turnout is required as we need to cover all colours from Orange to Brown. Remember every point is crucial, and other clubs will have the same BUSA clash and injured members that we have. Unfortunately RR team captain John T came off worse in a knee kicking contest with a coo last week and is currently crocked, but he’ll be issuing team instructions in due course.

SoSOL5 - John Muir CP Dunbar

Posted on 25th February 2008

With some of our Juniors on a ScotJos weekend it was left to the oldies and our youngest member to fly the flag at SoSOL 5 held at the seaside resort of Dunbar.  With Dad’s taxi arriving late 5 year old Emma Amos just had time to scoot round the White course before the markers were collected in, finishing in 11th place. On Green it was a family challenge between Lindsey and Jim Knox, Lindsey triumphing on this occasion by a couple of minutes to finish overall 2nd with Jim in 4th.  On Blue  - Robin Sloan had a fine 4th place and Bill Bruce walked round to finish 40th (but not last !).

Upcoming events are: the first Scottish League event at Drumlanrig on 2 March, followed by either the SoSOL at Dalkeith Park or the Badge event at Kirkwhelpington on 9 March, then our CompassSport Trophy match in the Pentlands on 16 March.

Elibank - a brief report

Posted on 19th February 2008

Kirstin and Karen
Roxburgh Reivers hosted round 4 of the South of Scotland Orienteering League at Elibank on Sunday. The good weather resulted in a healthy turnout of over 160 competitors, many keen to sharpen their technique before the start of the 2008 Scottish League in two weeks time. Best club performance on the day came from Karen Maxwell who was first junior girl on the Light Green course. There were also solid runs from Iain and Jamie Cattermole running on a testing Orange course.

The prizegiving for the recent East of Scotland Championships was held on Sunday with Roxburgh Reivers claiming the trophies in the shape of Karen Maxwell on W14 and, running up several age classes, Kirstin Maxwell on W20.
